A strategic brand spin-off for an international innovative start-up in mental health, at the intersection of psychology and VR360º technology.

Context and challenge

The LUMINIFY story did not begin with a classic business plan. It began with an urgent need to adapt, and with a civic stance, in the first days of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The tech start-up ASPICHI had strong expertise in computer vision and was building an innovative VR platform. The war wiped out its plans overnight and forced the founders to rethink what their technology could do. With the nation’s mental health under threat from the shock and trauma of war, the team made a conscious choice: it combined its own IT developments with the expertise of leading psychologists and therapists. The result was a unique product at the intersection of psychology and immersive technology for mental-health recovery.

LUMINIFY, a therapist’s assistant, was born as an urgent response to the war, and its market entry in 2022 was chaotic and unfocused. Society and professional institutions were sceptical: they did not see how virtual technology could genuinely help people recover. We saw the start-up at one of its presentations and were deeply impressed by its social mission and the scale of its impact, so we offered our help. The main challenge: the product had no name or positioning of its own and lived “in the shadow” of the ASPICHI brand. After several in-depth interviews and strategy sessions, the team shared one vision. We set out to define the product’s unique strengths and turn a complex cross-disciplinary product into an independent, understandable brand.

Express audit and anti-crisis diagnosis
—
Took apart the technological potential of the ASPICHI start-up through interviews and strategy sessions with the founders.
— Found out why the product had lost focus and analysed the scepticism in the medical community.
— Defined the unique strengths of the cross-disciplinary product to separate it from the parent brand.

Strategic consulting and spin-off architecture
—
Carried out a classic brand spin-off, restructuring the portfolio around an autonomous stand-alone brand.
— Analysed the global market and competitors, and segmented the target audience.
— Sharpened the positioning and mission to attract international grants and investment.
‍

Transformation

The strategic stage began with a fundamental change in how the team and its clients saw the product. Over a series of in-depth strategy sessions we shaped the project’s philosophy around a strong, deeply empathetic archetype that conveys safety, care and professional protection of the patient. We found the start-up a new name rich in historical and philosophical meaning — LUMINIFY. It stands for the return of light and the hope of coming out of the darkest psychological states.

To structure communication and break stereotypes, we created a concise descriptor for clinics and therapists and built a clear logic of working with the product — from first testing to long-term support. We developed a coherent visual language: every element of the identity and the geometry of the brand mark convey inner balance, light and orientation in space. The branding covered every physical and digital touchpoint, from subtle labelling of VR equipment to presentation materials and merchandise.

Brand strategy and philosophy
‍
— Built the ideological foundation, empathetic archetype and tone of voice of the future brand.
— Mapped how clinics work with the product — from first contact to ongoing support.
— Set the strategic framework that removed distrust among patients and therapists.

Verbal identity: creating a voice

— Found and agreed on a unique name with deep meaning — LUMINIFY.
— Created a concise descriptor, a manifesto slogan and a messaging framework.
— Defined Tone of Voice rules for the in-house team and marketing.

Design engineering: giving it form

— Developed a visual language, a meaningful symbol and geometric lettering for the logo.
— Designed an adaptive design system and a starter set of priority brand touchpoints.
— Packaged comprehensive brand guidelines so the start-up team could implement the brand on its own.
‍

Results

The result is a coherent, intuitive brand that speaks to the global market. We built a unique positioning system and sharpened the key value messages, which quickly removed the barrier of distrust among medical professionals and patients alike. The project gained an inspiring manifesto slogan that became a cornerstone of communication for therapists and a source of light for patients. In effect, we moved the VR product out from under ASPICHI into a separate brand — a classic brand spin-off that reshaped the brand portfolio around a stand-alone brand. The new brand platform changed the start-up’s course: it put the foundations in order, launched day-to-day marketing, inspired and united the team, and opened the door to major grant programmes and investment.

Today LUMINIFY is a strong, resilient brand with an active, socially important mission. In Ukraine the project works mostly on a charitable basis, supporting veterans, service members, internally displaced people and others affected by the war. In the commercial markets of the USA and Europe it is being adopted by private clinics — proof of the strength of Ukrainian impact technology on the world stage.

Please note: this case — a comprehensive brand platform, an architecture of meaning and anti-crisis packaging for a start-up — is presented in brief, to show the overall context. The full communication strategy and results contain unique market insights that we are ready to share in person.

FAQ

Does a product need its own brand if the company already has a name?

Yes, when the product has a different audience, mission or market from the parent company. In the shadow of the main brand, such a product is hard to explain and even harder to sell. We moved LUMINIFY out from under the ASPICHI brand into an independent one, with its own name, positioning and voice that therapists and patients understand.

How do you overcome distrust of an innovative medical product?

Trust in medicine rests on safety, clarity and professional support. The brand must explain clearly how the product works and whom it helps. For LUMINIFY we created a concise descriptor for clinics and a clear path from first testing to ongoing support, and the brand’s empathetic archetype removed distrust among therapists and patients alike.

How does a brand help a social project win grants and enter the international market?

Grant programmes and investors back projects with a clear mission and an understandable impact. Once the mission, positioning and key messages are formulated, they are easy to convey to foundations, partners and clients in any country. The new brand platform opened grant programmes to LUMINIFY and helped it enter private clinics in the USA and Europe.

How long does it take to create a brand for a start-up, and where do we start?

Our work on LUMINIFY took 9 months: from interviews and strategy sessions with the founders to the name, visual language and brand guidelines for the team. The timeline for your project depends on the complexity of the product and the scope of work. Send us a request, and we will discuss your goals and propose a realistic work plan.
