GUD™

A comprehensive brand platform and anti-crisis relaunch for a Ukrainian maker of durable backpacks. From survival to an international vision.
Context and challenge
GUD, a brand of backpacks and bags, had clear positioning, its own production and an exceptionally loyal, active community. Then, in 2022, russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine destroyed the familiar landscape. The market froze, and the community built over years fell apart: some clients left the country, others went to defend it with weapons in hand. The old values no longer fit, sales were falling fast, and the team was caught in a crisis of uncertainty.
The main challenge was not only keeping the business alive, but finding new meaning and the inspiration to move forward. Management was overwhelmed by day-to-day operations and needed help. A vision, a transformed brand strategy and a product adapted to the harsh new reality were vital — not just to hold on, but to turn forced change into a new stage of deliberate growth.

Transformation
The strategic stage began with a deep dive into internal processes. We ran a series of in-depth interviews and strategy sessions, studied the production cycles and found hidden strengths and weak points in the product offer, the manufacturing and the brand ecosystem. We kept the authentic name GUD and built a clear system of messages and descriptors with the right market emphasis.
We developed a comprehensive brand platform, defined a new archetype and refreshed the tone of voice: sincere, concise and built on mutual support. We refined the logo with particular care and fully renewed the visual identity. Other key steps: restructuring the product line and pricing, public touchpoints, practical technical branding, new packaging and a complete relaunch of the marketing strategy.

Results
The result was a complete relaunch of a renewed, coherent GUD brand that the business could build value on. We sharpened the final positioning, updated the key messages and visual language, and prepared the ground for day-to-day marketing. The brand platform inspired management and gave the team its confidence back — an internal driver that soon showed in the financial results. GUD became an example of resilience: from crisis management and cash gaps to systematic restructuring and renewal. The business did not just survive the war. It became a systematic brand with its own R&D, a full set of modern brand touchpoints and a clear vision of resilience and growth.

FAQ
Design answers the question “what does it look like”, while branding also answers “why is it yours and why do people trust you”. Full branding includes strategy, values, tone of voice, logo, identity, packaging, labelling and many other elements. When all of this is brought into one system, the brand is recognised even without the logo, and clients come back more often.
Trust is built on real values backed by actions and the product. Young people sense falseness instantly, so promises of quality, reliability or sustainability must be visible not only in words but in materials, seams, packaging and transparent production. Strategy helps you state clearly what you believe in and communicate it consistently across every touchpoint.
A community forms around ideas and shared values, not just around a product. People stay with a brand that speaks to its audience as an equal, honestly and without excessive pathos, and gives a sense of belonging. A brand platform helps define who your people are, what unites them and how to talk to them.
The first step is to honestly understand what has changed in your audience, market and product. Then positioning, the product line, pricing and communication are reviewed: this is an anti-crisis adjustment that can grow into a full rebranding. Changing the name is not always necessary: in the case of GUD it was kept, while the meaning, tone of voice and visual language were renewed.
We start with a conversation about your brand: what works, what doesn’t and where you want to go. Then we run interviews and strategy sessions, study the product and production, and develop the brand platform and identity. Renewing the GUD brand took 9 months and covered internal processes, changes to the product range and an active public presence. Your timeline depends on many factors and the scope of work. Send us a request, and we will prepare a step-by-step plan and an estimated timeline.
